Instructions on University STAFF on how to add a University Printer to an OSX machine (Macintosh)

Students should refer to their campus specific instructions off located here PaperCut Overview for Users - Pay for Print System

Step-by-step guide

Following these steps will allow your Macintosh computer to print to the new Canon printer/copiers (1025, 42xx, C52xx, 62xx) - and you can even print two-sided copies. Only if you need to print stapled copies (note - the 1025 model doesn't have stapling capabilities), use department ID management (printing account codes), or select custom paper settings will you need to further configure your installation with more advanced steps.

  • Find the new Canon printer/copier in your department and note the network name printed on the orange strip that's been affixed to the device.
  • Please change the setting in "Apple Menu > System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General > Allow apps downloaded from" to "Anywhere" from your current setting (probably "Mac App Store and identified developers") before proceeding, or the UMS Printer Utility may be marked as "damaged." After running the UMS Printer Utility.app (below) and installing your printers, return to this setting and change it back from "Anywhere" to its prior setting.
  • Download UMS Printer Utility
  • Mount the downloaded ums-printer-utility.dmg file by double-clicking it. (If you can't find the .dmg file, search for it in Spotlight). The mounted disk image is called UMS Printer Setup.
  • If you're presented with a warning requesting your permission to open "ums-printer-utility" or "UMS Printer Setup", press Open to allow it.
  • Make sure to run the Canon PostScript Installer once before proceeding. (You'll need administrator rights and a password.)
  • If you are configuring a Canon 1025-model printer, also run the Canon UFR Installer. (Again, you'll need administrator rights.)
  • Run the UMS Printer Utility.app (the icon with the scroll) by first holding down the control key and left-clicking the icon, and then choosing Open from the pop-up menu. Then select Open if requested.
  • Again, accept the security warning (if present) by choosing Open.
  • Search for the printer (search for "umm" for UMaine-Machias or "usm" for USM), choose the Automatic driver choice to install the printer, and quit the program when done.
  • If you need to enable stapling or department ID management, configure your drivers beginning in step 9 under "Manual Install Directions."

Manual Install Instructions

If for some reason the UMS Printer Utility does not work, you can install a university printer manually by using the following instructions. These may not be for the faint of heart! So you may want to call the help desk instead.

NOTE: These steps assume you have installed the PostScript driver pack from the UMS Printer Utility DMG

1. Add the printer with the "+" icon.
2. Select the IP icon
3. The address is "oro01-ps01.uad.maine.edu"
4. The protocol is "Line Printer Daemon - LPD" (some versions of the Mac OS X operating systems may say "LPD/LPR")
5. The queue name will be known by your departmental support staff or by calling your local IT staff.
6. The name should be the same as the queue. Just copy and paste from the queue.
7. The location can be empty, but you can fill it in if necessary.
8. In the Use field, go to "Select Software." Type in either 1025, 4235, C5235, or 6255, and choose the respective driver for the model:

        Canon iR1020/1024/1025
        Canon iR-ADV 4225/4235 PS
        Canon iR-ADV C5235/5240 PS
        Canon iR-ADV 6255/6265 PS

9. To enable your computer to take advantage of added functionality of the copier/printer, change the following settings from the default. Also, see the previous section to add your department's copy code, or you will be unable to print!

To get to these settings, go to:

(OS X 10.10 - Yosemite) - Apple Menu > System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > (double-click on the desired printer on the left) > Settings > Options
(OS X 10.9 - Mavericks) - Apple Menu > System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > (double-click on the desired printer on the left) > Settings > Options
(OS X 10.8 - Mountain Lion) - Apple Menu > System Preferences > Print & Scan > (double-click on the desired printer on the left) > Settings > Driver
(OS X 10.7 - Lion) - Apple Menu > System Preferences > Print & Scan > (double-click on the desired printer on the left) > Printer Setup > Driver
(OS X 10.6 - Snow Leopard) - Apple Menu > System Preferences > Print & Fax > (double-click on the desired printer on the left) > Printer Setup > Driver
