In 2022, The Standard will be replacing Lincoln Financial Group as our Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, Life Insurance and Accidental Death and Disability vendor!

For more than a century, The Standard’s expertise in Life and Disability benefits has helped people protect their families and their financial futures when life doesn’t go as planned. Life insurance pays a benefit directly to your beneficiary, helping to cover living expenses for your family and pay for things like medical or funeral expenses. Disability insurance is designed to replace a portion of your income, helping you continue to meet your financial commitments if you cannot work due to a covered illness or injury.

The Standard is proud to become the University of Maine System’s new carrier for Life, Short Term Disability and Long Term Disability insurance, effective January 1, 2022. Fulfilling our promise to be there for claimants in their time of need is the most important thing we do.

For an added measure of financial protection, the University also provides Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance at no cost to eligible employees.  AD&D insurance differs from life insurance in that in addition to protection against death, employees are covered for other life-changing injuries such as loss of limbs and loss of sight or hearing.  Additional AD&D coverage can also be purchased.  The AD&D insurance program is also insured through Prudential.

Basic Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D)

The University of Maine System provides, at no cost to eligible employees, an insurance amount equal to employees' annual salary, rounded up to the next highest $1,000. Employee AD&D insurance benefits are paid to the employee or their designated beneficiary(ies).
When employees are age 65 or more, their amount of insurance is limited to 65% of the amount for which they would then be insured if there were no limitations.  This amount continues to decrease to a minimum amount of 15% by age 85.
When group term basic AD&D coverage ends due to termination, resignation, retirement, etc., there is no option to convert the group coverage to an individual policy.
The Basic AD&D plan includes:

  • Repatriation of Remains Benefit.
  • Seat Belt & Airbag Benefit.

Supplemental (Optional) Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D)

In addition to the coverage that the University of Maine System provides to employees at no cost, eligible employees may elect to purchase additional AD&D coverage in increments of $10,000 to a maximum of $350,000.  Employees pay for the Optional AD&D insurance at low group rates through payroll deductions. The amount elected cannot exceed 10 times the employee's salary.  Employees may purchase either individual or family coverage. If individual coverage is purchased, employees will be insured for the amount elected. If family coverage is purchased, employees' spouses and dependent children will receive partial coverage.
When employees are age 65 or more, their amount of insurance is limited to 65% of the amount for which they would then be insured if there were no limitations.  This amount continues to decrease to a minimum amount of 15% by age 85.

Each family member’s coverage is a percentage of the benefit amount selected.

  • If an employee has a spouse, their spouse’s coverage amount is 60% of the employee's election.
  • If an employee has dependent children, each child is covered for 20% of the employee's amount (up to a maximum of $50,000 per child).

For family coverage, if a family member passes away, the employee is automatically named as beneficiary.

Under the Basic AD&D plan, and if employees participate in the Optional AD&D plan, they (and if enrolled for family coverage, their eligible dependents) are insured for injuries that result from a covered accident within 365 days as specified below:
